Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine have long been used to prevent and treat migraines and other headaches with great success. Migraine headaches in particular seem to respond very well to the combination of acupuncture and herbal therapy. Over 20 clinical studies have shown a reduction in migraine symptoms by 50% or more with acupuncture. For example, a randomized clinical study done in 2017 found an average of 3 fewer migraines per month after a course of 20 acupuncture sessions. These benefits were found to last for at least 6 months after the treatments.

Something that many migraine suffers are not aware of is that there is a hidden danger from chronic migraines. This danger is that patients who suffer from migraines have increased rates of cognitive decline, and a significantly higher risk of developing dementia.
The good news is that both acupuncture therapy as well as Chinese herbal medicine have been shown to reduce cognitive decline, and lower the risk for dementia for migraine patients who receive regular acupuncture treatments. This research was done in 2022 with 10,00 patients and found that acupuncture treatments reduced the risk for dementia in migraine sufferers by over 50%.
Additional research suggests that these benefits are due to a reduction in oxidative stress, reactant oxygen species (ROS), and anti-inflammatory effects of acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine.
