Frequently Asked Questions
About Acupuncture

Does Acupuncture hurt?

No. Prior to their first treatment, many people do not know that acupuncture can be painless. Over the centuries, refined needle insertion techniques have been developed which enable the skilled acupuncture practitioner to place a needle with little or no sensation. People often report that they feel some warmth, pressure, or dull aching and that the feeling is unfamiliar but relaxing, or they feel nothing at all.

Acupuncture needles are very fine, about the size of a thick hair. They are solid, and nothing is injected through them. So they have very little in common with the “monster needles” most people remember from their childhood. All of the needled we use are sterilized and disposable.

Is Acupuncture safe?

The Safety record of Acupuncture is outstanding with minor adverse events (usually local bruising) being reported in about 0.1% (1 in 1000) treatments.

Does Acupuncture really work?

Yes! When you come in for your consultation appointment we will show you clinical research that demonstrates the effectiveness of acupuncture for your condition. Can’t wait to learn more? You can start with this page from the US Department of Health that explains some of their acupuncture research findings. There is also this page explaining the current College of physicians guidelines is that patients should try therapies such as acupuncture before anything else, including over the counter pain medications, for problems such as back pain.

What if I’m afraid of needles?

No Problem. Our clinic offers several non-needle therapies. Chinese Medicine has lots of treatments other than acupuncture that provide excellent results. These include cupping Imperial Grade botanical medicine, Specialized topical products, Tibetan Herbal Foot soaks, and much more.

Does Acupuncture work for depression?

Depression is a complex diagnosis that can have several root causes. It is important to determine the cause of the depression to figure out the best way to treat it. Both acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicinals have been found to help with depression in clinical research. Here is a sample article from Scientific American explaining how acupuncture was found to be as effective as medications in the treatment of depression.

How many sessions are needed?

For most conditions a reduction in pain is noticed immediately during your very first session. The number of treatments needed to fix or correct the condition, however, varies significantly person to person. Several factors, including the severity of the problem and how long it has been there, are part of what determines how many treatments a specific symptom or condition will need. If we determine that acupuncture may be able to help you, then we will do a series of 4 acupuncture treatments to figure out your individual rate of response, and on your fourth visit we should be able to tell you how many sessions you will need.
