Tennis Elbow is a common name for elbow pain that is usually caused by overuse of the arm, forearm, or hand. It can come on all at once or slowly over time. Tennis elbow pain can range from a minor annoyance to intense pain that limits daily activities such as driving or sleeping.
The western medical name for tennis elbow is Lateral Epicondylitis, meaning inflammation of the lateral, or outside bony area of the elbow. Lateral epicondylitis is characterized by inflammation of the muscles and tendons in this area of the elbow. Golfer’s elbow, or Medial Epicondylitis is the same problem when it occurs on the medial, or inner bony area of the elbow.
Acupuncture treatment for tennis elbow is usually very easy and successful. At Orlando Acupuncture our treatment methods do not require putting needles directly into the elbow so our patients are able to move the elbow during treatment and feel immediate results. Acupuncture helps to relieve the pain and inflammation involved in both lateral epicondylitis and medial epicondylitis.
The healing process for tennis elbow does usually require reducing the overuse that caused the pain, so reducing activities that aggravate the pain is recommended during the first phase of treatment.
Several studies have shown that acupuncture is effective for the pain of tennis elbow. One study was presented at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Another study published in the journal, Rheumatology, also found that acupuncture has effective for treating tennis elbow.
